How to get a job through networking

Nervous about networking? We're here to help you can get started and show you why it’s a powerful tool in your job search.

How networking can help your job search (and build your confidence)

Job hunting can be a bit of a slog at times. Filling out applications every day, drafting countless cover letters and dealing with rejection. It's enough to knock anyone's confidence.

One of the great things about networking is that it can restore some confidence as well as offering a different way to find jobs. You'll connect with people who can share knowledge and advice about the industry you want to work in.

That knowledge will help you understand what skills and experience you should be highlighting to employers. It'll also let you see how other people got into their roles, giving you a clearer idea of paths you could follow.

Networking will also help you:

  • find training opportunities
  • see different perspectives and hear fresh ideas from others
  • develop friendships with people who have similar goals

But how do you know it's worth the effort?

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development asked employers for their perspective. They found that 45% found new employees through professional networking sites.

If you're not putting yourself out there, that's a lot of employers who might be missing out on what you have to offer!

Different ways to network

It can feel daunting reaching out to new people. Don't stress, there are lots of different ways to network. Why not try out some to build up your confidence and find what works for you?

  1. Friends and family. An easy place to start is with the people you know. It can be as simple as mentioning you're looking for jobs or to progress in your career. They might surprise you with who or what they know!
  2. Social media. Find people outside your circle without the pressure of meeting face-to-face. A great place to start is LinkedIn. Check out our guide on getting started and join more than 930 million professionals sharing opportunities.
  3. Industry events and training. Research the industry you work in or would like to. You'll find organisations who host conferences or events that are ideal for networking.
  4. Job fairs. Go directly to employers actively looking to hire you. You'll get to chat to them and understand more about different roles. Get started and search online to see what’s happening near you.
  5. Volunteering. It's a nice way to get your foot in the door. You'll build contacts, develop your skills and it may lead to paid opportunities. At the very least, it'll serve as amazing experience for a future application.
  6. Informational interview or coffee chat. Set up an informal meeting with a professional person you admire. You can do this in-person or virtually. It’s a fantastic chance to learn about a company, industry or someone’s career path.
